One of Nigeria’s most celebrated actresses has urged members of the African diaspora in Ireland to always remain committed in their pursuit of success.

Mercy Johnson-Okojie, who with her husband Prince Odi Okojie was guest of honour at this year’s Miss Nigeria Ireland pageant held in Dublin recently, added that her achievements in the Nollywood – the third biggest film industry in the world – were a true example of what a focused individual can attain in life.

Explaining her family background and the challenges she faced growing up, Johnson-Okojie claimed that she fought poverty to rise to the top. “I know what it means to be hungry and how to cry. I cry a lot,” she said.

The evening also celebrated Jummy Agboola, who was crowned Miss Nigeria Ireland for 2015. Second place went to Gillian Anyanwu, who was also named Miss Tourism Nigeria Ireland, while Anita Okorie came third.

Others honoured on the night included Wale Soyingbe of international bank Citi, who recently transferred from Dublin to Nigeria, and who was recognised for his support of Ireland’s Nigerian community for over a decade.

Addressing guests at the show – which included comedian Emeka Smith, Edo State politician John Yakubu and Sergius Ogun, member of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives –  pageant founder Peter Oghina praised the support he has received from all quarters in organising the event.

“To all who found time out of their busy schedule, we remain eternally grateful,” he said. “Without you there will be no Miss Nigeria Ireland.”
