Tributes have been paid to Garda Anthony Golden who was killed at a shooting incident at a house near Omeath in Co Louth on Sunday 11 October.

Garda said a woman was seriously injured before the gunman – reported to be a dissident republican – took his own life in the incident, which happened after Garda Golden responded to a domestic dispute.

Offering her prayers to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, Garda Commissioner O’Sullivan said she was “saddened” by the tragedy, adding that the incident “highlights the unique nature of the job carried out by the men and women of An Garda Síochána, and the dangers they face every day.”

Her views were shared by Mary Mitchell O’Connor, Fine Gael TD for Dún Laoghaire, who described the murder as “a shocking tragedy.”

O’Connor said Garda Golden, who was previously stationed in Cabinteely, was an excellent member of the Garda who showed professionalism in the communities where he worked.

“Garda Golden’s death is yet again a stark reminder that members of the gardaí face risks every day as they carry out their duty,” she added. “He bravely laid down his life in the line of duty and displayed great courage in protecting the community he served.

“I would like to extend my sympathy to his wife and children, his family, his colleagues and everyone who knew and loved Garda Golden. We all stand with Garda Golden’s family and An Garda Síochána at this very tragic time.”
